“Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.” Philippians 2:14-15
I am happy to share that the Vision/Mission Writing Team has begun to meet with Dr. Herb Sadler. The first item of work on the agenda for those of us on the Vision/Mission/Core Values team with Dr. Sadler is to pray. We are daily asking God what is the mission and vision that He has for Chickasaw UMC for slightly over 30 days. Because of this work that I am doing, I have New Testament Mission Statement for a variety of the New Testament Church swirling around in my mind. This one for the church at Philippi was on my mind when I woke up, today. There is an amazing insider-outsider perspective on this vision statement.
The church at Philippi is being called by God to be “bright lights” to a world “full of crooked and perverse people.” This word picture describes the disciples of Jesus as people who are shining like “stars” in some Bible translations. We all can see stars in our mind’s eye. Stars are contrasting lights against an amazingly large background of darkness. God’s vision for the Philippian church is that they would bring light to people who are weary from darkness. Think for a minute what would the star look like if there were only one or two? The countless stars on display are what grabs our attention. The people outside of the church will notice us if we are living in harmony with one another.
The immediate context of this call to be light is “to do everything without arguing and complaining.” I wish I could say that showing the light of Christ was as simple as being an agreeable person. There are a number of calls to live the Christian Life faithfully in the preceding verses of Philippians. So it isn’t as simple as being an agreeable person, but I would say it is a good place to start.
I don’t know what the Lord will lead us on the Mission Statement Writing Team to share with
the church as a whole. For today, let me share a simple mission statement for us and every church in the world – We are called to be a people of light in a world of darkness. See you Sunday at our place of light in Chickasaw! God Bless
